In your clients’ own language
Healthcare and social service providers can appreciate first-hand the importance of communicating with a client in their own language. This helps prevent mistakes in diagnosis or treatment instructions. Having a professional interpreter at the appointment also allows the client to ask questions and speak their mind.
Ottawa is home to people from all language backgrounds. Types of interpretation available
As a healthcare or social service provider, you can request any of the following OLA interpretation services:
• Face-to-face (pre-scheduled): An interpreter is physically present at the session and interprets the conversation that occurs within that setting among the clients, service providers, and others present in the room. This service is available to providers in the Champlain region only.
• Over the phone (pre-scheduled or immediate): The provider is connected to an interpreter through an agency and the interpretation occurs with the use of a speakerphone. This service is available to providers in Ontario.
• Remote (pre-scheduled): The provider is connected to an interpreter via an online platform. This service is available to providers in Ontario.
Trained interpreters speak in the first person and interpret the messages between two parties directly and in the same register as the speaker. They remain neutral and keep all information confidential unless required by law. It is strongly recommended to have a professional interpreter instead of a family member or a friend discuss the client’s sensitive issues with their service provider.
Urgent access to interpretation services

Where else is interpretation available?
Most departments at hospitals have access to language interpretation services. If your patient needs an interpreter, always ask for one at the time that you schedule an appointment for them. The interpreter assigned to your patient will then call them to confirm the date, time, and location of the appointment.
